Today, we are writing to you on behalf of Ukrainian Athletes to request that you immediately suspend the national federations of Russia and Belarus. The suspension must also include the banning of all athletes from international events, including the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships, World Athletics Indoor Championships, European Throwing Cup, World Athletics Championships, European Athletics Championships, World Athletics U20 Championships, SPAR European Cross Country Championships as well as Diamond League, World Indoor Tour, Continental Tour and other one-day meeting circuits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, supported by Belarus, is a clear breach of the Olympic Charters \u2013 a breach that must be confronted with strong sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Early morning on February 24, Russia launched a missile attack on Ukrainian cities, and later a full-scale invasion began. A part of the Russian troops entered the territory of Ukraine from Belarus.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s been several day already since Ukrainian Athletes, our compatriots, our families and our friends are living under constant shelling; our children are hiding in bomb shelters and basements as a result of this aggressive attack by Russia on our country. Military strikes are inflicted on civilian population, orphanages, kindergartens and hospitals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to immense danger for communities, we have to earnestly ask you to put Russia and Belarus under rightful sanctions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Athletes Commissions of World Athletics and European Athletics and organizers should oppose and, in solidarity with the Ukrainian athletes, immediately remove Russia and Belarus from the board of members.<\/span><\/p>\n

The athletes of World and European Athletics should take immediate action to prevent Russia and Belarus from being encouraged to act. Their actions have repeatedly violated international law and Olympic charters. Your lack of action will send a message to every athlete that you have chosen Russia and Belarus interests over athlete interests. Your actions will define your legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n
